MIRACLE IN THE MUD

On July 30, 2024 , a Landslide occurred in Wayanad-Chooramala. Where many died and a few survived . Here, Sujatha escaped from this tragedy along with her granddaughter. She has an unusual companion to thank for guarding them through the heavy rain and calamity - an elephant.

Sujatha was asleep in her house when she heard unfamiliar noises. As she woke up her house was full of mud and water, within minutes the ceiling started to crack and the house started to collapse. When she was trying to escape she heard her granddaughter, Mridula crying for help.
She somehow pulled her up, and lay down under a palm tree along with Mridula. She thought they were safe. But her relief was short- lived.
As they comforted each other , 3 elephants appeared in front of them. They became terrified but couldn't do anything so Sujatha pleaded and said to the elephants that "we have escaped death and reached here, please don't harm us" . To her surprise the tusker stood and guard them until rescue workers found them the next morning.

Sacrifice

How my body blooms from every vein

more fragrantly, since you appeared to me;
Look, I walk slimmer now and straighter
and all you do is wait; who are you then?

Look, I feel how I’m moving away,
How I’m shedding my old life, leaf by leaf.
Only your smile spreads like sheer stars
over you and, soon now, over me.

Whatever shines through my childhood years
still namesless and gleaming like water,
I will name after you at the altar
you made me who I am today.

Natural disaster is a sudden and terrible event in nature that usually results in serious damage and many casualties. There are many types of natural disasters like tsunami, hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, wildfires ,volcanic eruptions, blizzards, hailstorms and floods and their accompanying events.

Natural calamities have profound and often devastating effects on human lives such as loss of life and injuries, displacement, economic impact, mental and emotional stress, health risks, destruction of infrastructure, Environmental Impact, Social Disruption, Educational Disruption, long term recovery etc.

Natural calamities can have significant psychological impacts on those who experience them. These impacts can vary depending on the severity of the disaster, the individual's personal experiences, and the support systems available. Some common psychological effects are Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Acute stress and Anxiety, Cognitive Impairments, Survivor’s Guilt, Depression, Grief and Bereavement, Impact on Children, Behavioral Changes and so on. Access to mental health support and community resources is crucial for helping individuals cope with and recover from the psychological aftermath of such events.

Natural Calamities also affect a country's infrastructure and economy. Capital assets and infrastructure such as housing, schools, factories and equipment, roads, dams and bridges are lost. A country’s natural resources may also be affected—hurricanes destroy forests, hurricanes and droughts decrease soil fertility.

Affected communities recover from the after affects of natural disasters through a combination of short-term emergency response and long-term rebuilding efforts. Emergency Response, Support Services, Restoration, Resilience Building, damage assessment are some of the ways in which they recover.

Bringing awareness, education, preparedness, and warning systems can reduce the catastrophic impact of a natural disaster on communities.

In conclusion, natural calamities deeply affect human lives by causing destruction and loss, both physically and emotionally. They disrupt communities, lead to significant suffering, and leave lasting psychological impacts. However, these challenges also highlight the strength and resilience of individuals and societies. Recognizing these effects is essential for improving our preparedness and response to such events.

The unexpected surprise

Nida was very excited . Tomorrow was her birthday, and it was going to be special because her father had promised a surprise. As she lay in bed, she couldn't sleep, thinking about the surprise. 'What could it be? A new bicycle? Or gold anklets? No, probably not gold anklets, since they couldn't afford it. She had invited her friends, and she hoped they would come.

After a while, she fall asleep. Suddenly, a loud, strange sound makes her awake. She looked around, and saw that her house was filled with mud and big rocks. Her parents tightly hugged her. Half of their house was destroyed. It's a landslide,' her father said. Her eyes were filled with tears . They rushed to the next room, she saw her new bicycle, half-covered in mud, through blurry eyes. She tried to smile, but before she could, with another loud sound the entire house and family were swept away by the disaster, along with her dreams.

The Forgotten Library

In a misty village surrounded by an ancient mountains, an old library stood neglected. Historian Clara, fascinated by local legends, ventured into the village and stumbled upon the library. Inside, she found a dusty, untitled book filled with handwritten tales of the villagers who had been long forgotten.

As Clara delved into the book, she discovered stories of a heroic young woman, a wise inventor, and a mysterious benefactor. Each story revealed the village's rich history and it's people's contributions. Clara began transcribing these accounts, bringing the library's tales to life.

Her work sparked renewed interest in the library, and the villagers, once indifferent, began to visit, eager to reconnect with their past. The forgotten library transformed into a vibrant center of community and memory, all thanks to Clara's dedication to preserving its secrets.
